This project is part of a transformation process that the city of Abrantes has been developing and will have a decisive impact on the new image of the city since its location is very close to the main road axes and access to the historic center, which also justifies the importance the city has given to the renovation and preservation of the old market building.
At the heart of the building, a central atrium of seven meters high is proposed. This generous central void will connect the multipurpose space of the old market with a series of spaces dedicated to work and leisure events.
The proposal aims to make the Old Municipal Market a meeting place that enhances the unique characteristics of its old spaces while incorporating new structures to accommodate a new program of uses. It is a sensitive intervention to the existing building, which will gain a more modern, lighter environment where light is the protagonist.
The building was kept as an open and accessible space and, at the same time, care was taken to make the vestiges of the old market visible to the eyes of the users so that the space starts a new life already full of warmth and personality.
